Sad news from a good friend

Postby Rob » September 29th, 2011, 9:39 pm

I received an email from Brian (Hagerstown MD) today and I'm sure others did, too.

To All my Motorcycle and non Motorcycle riding friends and family.

One of my best Friends Jason " Bam Bam" McDaniel was involved in a
serious Motorcycle
Accident on Sept. 1st while on his way to work. He was T-Boned by a Van
who was making a left hand turn
And claims to have not seen Jason. Due to the accident Jason has lost
his left leg from above the knee.
Jason spent over a year and a half in Iraq fighting for our freedom and
I would like for you, my friends and family
To maybe do something for him and his family. The proceeds of this ride
will go to help Jason purchase a prosthetic leg and to help offset some
of his medical bills that he has incurred due to the accident that
insurance will not cover. He has had people from his work donate their
own personal leave and vacation time to help him as well.
Please see attached flier for more information.
Thank You and I hope to see many if not all of you there for this event.

I had the privilege of riding with Jason several times when he didn't have to report for duty in the army reserve. I can only imagine how tough this is for him and his wife and son.

For those who want to attend the ride, it is Oct 9 in Chambersburg PA and sponsored by the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association. Registration starts 10 a.m., ride starts at 12 noon.

Well damn. It always sucks when someone loses a leg. What else can you say about that? But when you make it back from lose-a-leg-a-raq with both of them only to come home and have someone take it off here, seems to suck even more.

Best wishes and I hope he gets a motorcycle friendly prosthetic.

Yes, as sad as it is that seems to be the normal response, "I didn't see you". Give him our best and I also hope for a large turnout,,,, and good weather too.

Great turnout today and it was great to see Jason in such good spirits. You just can't keep a good man down. His leg is gone but his heart and everything else has not changed a bit. He is a warrior who is far from done.

I and all present heard his account of the accident and painful recovery in the hospital. We also heard about his plans to transform his totaled "shovelhead" into a trike.

There is no doubt in my mind the worst pain of all for Jason was watching hundreds of bikes take off today without him. He won't let that happen very often. He is one VERY tough hombre.

One thing I want to add here.

The person explaining the details of the ride said, "The entire ride is in PA, so helmets are not required."

Jason immediately added, "...but highly recommended. I didn't always wear one to work, but I was wearing one that day. It was not DOT approved but did the job."

Jees! I missed this one when you announced it few days back. It's scary out there and it's really frustrating and somewhat disappointing to see drivers not using their indicators or just cutting in front with the mentality "I can make it, that guy on my left is too far" or "He already spotted me, he has to stop for me...". Idiots!!!

Good to hear that his spirit is still strong. Im truly sorry, and the best to him, his family and friends.
