louder horn

Postby callahanbrkpds » September 25th, 2008, 3:37 pm

I have been using my horn a lot in the past 2 weeks. I was looking at the Stebel Nautilus horn on you tube, quite a difference from the stock horn, and seems worth getting:

^^ +1 Mine is mounted in the same place. A no-brainer safety mod for $40 or less. You will get folks' attention with this horn!

Looks like it is zip tied to the crash bar.

I was out of Duck Tape!!!

It does have a zip tie on it... put that there when I first mounted it JUST to make sure the mount was secure ...

great horn! Just make sure you use a relay!

If you need some tips on best practices on installing this (or any other horn)

cut and past that in and you can get some great tips!

This makes a lot of sense and it's good to know you can get something better than that sqeak they call our stock horns.

But honestly, in 5 years of commuting, I've never used my horn except to help emphasize I'm giving someone the finger and I'm super pissed off.

But truth be known, you're probably a lot better off: ridiing super defensive; making avoidance manuevers (swerving, braking, accelerating); anticipating bad driver moves; learning to read inattentive or agressive drivers; keeping abreast of all drivers in front, behind, to your left, right; antiticating intersection moves; and keeping in mind that you are more or less invisble 90% of the time.

This is how I ride everyday and honestly I've only found it necessary to use my horn 2 times and even then it was after the fact and only to give somebody the finger and a piece of my mind, Otherwise I've never used my horn nor thought about using it.

A better horn is always a good thing to have.

I'm glad you haven't needed one, but I'm sure that you have heard the saying "you don't need it until you NEED it"
