OIL & OIL FILTER?

Postby rmagdn » February 21st, 2012, 10:11 am

I am attempting to changing my oil & oil filter for the very first time by myself. What kind of oil and oil filter should I get? ( I have a 2005 C50)

I have a 02 Volusia. I use the generic filter that MotorcycleSuperstore has and then I use 10W40 motorcycle oil. A lot of us as newbies found out that you don't use "car" motor oil as the additives in it will make your clutch slip. I usually use the standard stuff for motorcycles at Advanced Auto.

Castrol Actevo 20w-50 motorcycle oil and suzuki filter on my end. The 20w-50 is better all year long for hotter climates than the 10_40.

It's super easy. If you can do a car, you can do a bike.

20w-50 Castrol Act-Evo and either a K&N or Hi-Flo filter.

I like the K&N filters because of the nut welded on the end.. makes them easy to get on and off.

Oil.. well you're going to get a million opinions. Any good motorcycle oil for wet clutches (no friction modifiers) will work. Teddybear is right.. check that bottom rocker on the API logo. It should be empty. Putting an oil in with friction modifiers can cause clutch slippage and ruin your clutch.

When using car oil, just be sure not to get one that says its got cleansing detergents. It can play havoc with your gears. Otherwise its not an issue. Bike oils and filters are a myth created by the petroleum companies. Do the research. I run a regular car filter in my Vol, using an adapter I paid $10.00 for on-line. Its saved me plenty and its proven the car filters are far better than even K&N bike filters. As you can see, I'm adamant on this subject because I've done the research and am slightly pissed at having been fooled for so long. I pay close attention when anyone says special "for motorcycles". Most of the time its b******* to get us to pay higher prices.

K&N 138 and Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 full synthetic. I think I'm the Shell guinea pig here.

Shell Rotella is the best. I'm using it too. I'm in Arizona so 5w is fine for the lower heat.
